Guide to download papers/international books from SciHub

This guide explains simple methodologies to obtain research papers free of cost from Sci-Hub without using TOR browser or any VPN

For people who are unaware of what Sci-Hub is, can access the following link:

The Stepwise Guide for downloading paper:
  1. Go to scholar.google.com.
  2. Put the heading of the paper in the search bar.
  3. Open the first link or the links that lead you to page of authentic sellers of the paper (generally IEEE, Science Direct, Springer, Taylor and Francis, IOPScience etc.)
  4. Open sci-hub.la in another tab. (Please note that the URL of scihub keeps changing with time as they may get blocked or removed by the authorities. Currently operational links are: 80.82.77.83 (direct IP link of sci-hub); sci-hub.tv; sci-hub.hk. You may search on google for working links of sci-hub. Please note that the .onion website will not open in local browser, it can be accessed via TOR browser or by use of VPN software.
  5. Paste the URL of the link obtained in step 3 in the search bar of sci-hub website. The URL is also called DOI or Digital Object Identifier.
  6. Fill the captcha if prompted to. The required paper will appear in pdf format.
  7. Click on the download button( the red circle, either one will work) Please note that the upper right button will appear only in chrome browser. For other browsers you may use the button with Russian phrase in red circle (it says "Save this Article")
  8. You may reload the page with the button in blue circle (it says "To Re download") if the page stops loading. This happens rarely.
  9. The download will start.

Shortcut method, only for Google Chrome users (via Chrome extension):

  1. Go to the following link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/find-doi-in-sci-hub/mponnjfbehdmaeiomjopicikfdckgbnk?hl=en
  2. Download the extension: Find DOI in sci-hub
  3. Go to the authentic source webpage of paper(as above).
  4. Click on the extension button, it will redirect the page directly to the download page.
  5. Or, highlight the DOI via your cursor, and right click to find the DOI directly in sci-hub.

Stepwise guide for downloading books from libgen or b-ok:
  1. Open libgen.io or b-ok.org.
  2. Type the name of the book in the search bar.
  3. Look out for download pdf links.
  4. It is preferrable to use libgen.io as it has direct download links. b-ok at times may have links only available at TOR, that too may not work properly.
  5. Go for b-ok only if you find direct download links.

Note(s):

1. The method given for sci-hub is also applicable for downloading books published internationally. You may get redirected to mirror websites (most probably libgen.io), once you search the URL in the search bar of sci-hub.

2. Sci-hub will not work in institutional wifi, for example in colleges due to the so called ethical issues. Make sure that you use your own personal data or router for accessing sci-hub.

3. The method of chrome extension is very effective, as the developer of the extension keeps updating the sci-hub website link, for more information, visit the chrome extension URL mentioned above.

4. The work of the developer must be blessed and appreciated. If not monetarily, support scihub on twitter: https://twitter.com/sci_hub

  2. Thank You for feedback, doomsday. The methods are still functional, it is just that the sci-hub does not provide gateway to access some papers http://www.academicjournals.org. But the paper that you seek to download is openly available at ResearchGate. Please follow the following link to download the full-length paper.

    https://www.researchgate.net/publication/273889759_A_review_on_auxetic_structures_and_polymeric_materials.

Feel free to get back here again, I will give you direct download link for the paper; if problem persists.

  3. What should I do if there is a digitalized version of the book but it still hasn't been uploaded on their server, hence is not available for download? Like I'm entering the title and just get redirected to Google Scholar, and that's it.

  4. Well, then you might have to wait for a few days, before it really gets on the web. Then the Sci-Hub servers will bypass paywalls to make it accessible for you.
